Port Talbot FC says the tweet to Daley (front) was a ‘misguided prank’ after Thomas left his phone unattended

A Welsh footballer has been suspended after an abusive message was sent to Olympic diver Tom Daley.

Daniel Thomas, 28, will be the subject of an internal investigation into a tweet sent to Daley, Welsh Premier League Port Talbot Town FC says.

It has been reported a homophobic message was sent to Daley’s Twitter page.

Club officials said their player had been the victim of a “misguided prank” after leaving his phone unattended.

The tweet came from the player’s account, which has since been deleted.

In a separate incident earlier this week, a 17-year-old was arrested over a malicious tweet relating to Daley’s late father and was given a warning.

Police said the teenager was given a harassment warning before being bailed pending an investigation into other communications on his Twitter account.

Cheryl Cole has shown her support to Team GB Olympic diver Tom Daley on Twitter.

The Call My Name hitmaker contacted Daley on the micro-blogging site on Tuesday (31st July), asking the 18-year old athlete for diving lessons.

Chezza tweeted: “@tomdaley1994 I think you are amazing! Will you teach me how to swan dive?”

Daley then retweeted the Girls Aloud star’s message, adding: “@cherylcole Of course!!! But first you need to follow me ;)”

Tom has previously admitted that he has a huge crush on Cheryl, telling Heat magazine in June: “I’ve fancied her since The X Factor. She is just so sexy and my type…

“[Our date] would definitely be in Plymouth and I would take her for a hot-air balloon ride that ended with a BBQ on the beach in the sunset. It’s not very glamorous, but I think she might like a change.”

In other related news, the 17-year old who was arrested in connection with abusive messages sent to Daley has been released on bail and given a warning over his tweets.

As we previously reported, Tom was subjected to a series of taunts after missing out on a medal in the men’s synchronised diving final, with one of the posts even referencing Daley’s dead father.
